help wanted!

hello friends!

in less than 1 month, i will be off to europe! i will be doing a 3 week study abroad in ireland and then i will go on to visit berlin and amsterdam. of course i am very excited to see the lands and to eat great food. unfortunately i have never been to these places before and i have no idea where the good foods lie. i am sure i will find some just on my own but it would be nice to have some food destinations to have beforehand. so if you know any restaurants that serve good food for not too many euros please let me know! similarly if anyone has any suggestions on what local cuisines i should try, that would also be great! thank you for being awesome!

You'll be able to find the best apple pie in the world at Winkle, in Amsterdam.

Have fun on your trip!

that is appelgebak and is common all over holland. most restaurants serve it. winkle's might be better than most, but I've always been happy with appelgebak all over.

for cheap great food, try the albertcuyp markt in de pijp. great frites there, delicious herring stand, stroopwaffel and plenty more. just walk it and you'll see good stuff. the standard bearer for cheap delicious food in amsterdam is the Maoz falafel at Muntplein 1 of course.

one of the most transformative meals i've ever had was in dublin's temple bar district, at a spanish place called la paloma. being spanish food, it's very meat heavy, but the menu was so fabulous i tipped extra to get to walk with it (all the food was described like the steamy sections of trashy romance novels). also, you should eat seafood while in ireland--galway in particular is known for their salmon.

I love your question...my area of expertise (been to all those places several times, being a german girl and all hehe)>

Berlin: fore breakfast, always go to bakeries, they open really early, and have the freshest/tastiest buns ever- often making sandwiches out of them for you. tooo many great buns to choose from. the best place to get a pretzel in germany (outside of Bayern/Bavaria) would be outside the german parliament building, when you go in for a tour, there is always this gentleman standing there with fresh HOMEMADE pretzels and sandwhiches, doesn't cost much, and I have been all over germany looking for the best pretzel, and apart from bayern he was the best! tastes amazing! done the german way, crusty outdie, soft warm well cooked inside, with sea salt ontop (none of the grossness butter dripping stuff)...also the resteraunt inside parliament has the most deliouse garden/goat cheese salade, or open faced cheese/tomate on white baguet (more deliouse than it sounds lol). also try a 'Berliner' german pastry donught usually filled with orange marmilade of raspberry jam, they are avaliable everywhere, but from a bakery is best.
FYI: hwne in germany, resteraunt dinning is not that expensive, but if you would like to save money, hit bakeries, and grocery stores (groceries are VERY cheap in germany)- also eat all the fresh fruit you can! best comes from spain...try some german strusel of any type when your there, and apple torte...and a pop drink called 'Fanata' made by coca cola, avaliable everywhere, orange is my fav version...

Amsterdam: cafes, cafes, cafes. they have everything- and cheap too! from sandwhiches to salades, to full on meals, andwonderful tea, the fries from local store/chip type wagons are always WONDERFUL! I'm not a vegetarian, but the vegetarian resteraunts in amsterdam always are cheap and deliciouse!- try some icecream if you get the chance, pistachio is highly recomended.

Ireland- try the grits and pancakes! avaliable in most cafes...always cheap and elisouse, and they have so many ways of changing the grits (oatmealish) it's amazing! also the crossants are very good!

..sorry don't remember to many resteraunt names, I'm horrid at that, but there is a Bar/resterautn in Berlin called 'Viagra'- DO NOT let the name fool or mislead you, it's aimed at late teens, mid 20's crowd, and is not a ditry/sexual ect.. trype of place, dispite the name.... ask locals they will all know about it....sad your not going to Munchen, worlds best food is there...well in my opinion anyways lol.

sorry so long, you just got me on a very excited topic... feel free to ask questions if you have any...

I have to recommend a place called foodism in amsterdam, located in the cute jordaan district. especially their tomato soup and mozzarella/tomato sandwiches (good together!).

For Ireland, the regular old pub would serve good grub.
Things to try: irish stew with soda bread, a full irish breakfast, irish coffee (this is laced with wiskey)Tea time is great with scones, cakes etc.
If in Dublin, the temple bar area has loads of restaurants from a Korean on Exchequer Street, to Japanese- Wagamama to spanish etc. These are all in walking distance from Grafton Street (shopping area).
Hope this helps.

Debbie, I am SO jealous that you are studying abroad in Ireland! I am absolutely acheing to visit Dublin. But as Ive never been, I cant give you any suggestions. As for Amsterdam, make sure you have stroopwafels which is a cookie type confection sandwiched with caramel and usually served warm. Other Dutch favorites: chocolate sprinkles and Gouda cheese. I second the cafes suggestion above as well as apple pie.

In Germany, try pretzels (bresen, I think it is in Deutsch), strudel (both sweet and savory), pumpernickel bread, and my favorite, their fresh spreadable cheeses (Frischia is one brand) that are lighter than cream cheese but come in familiar flavors like onion and herb.

Enjoy and make sure to post about your trip!

Yellow Sunshine is a great, cheap vegetarian "diner" in Berlin that you have to try.

Make sure you try some Jan Hagel cookies in the Netherlands! They are easy to make at home when you get back!
Wish I was going on an adventure!

Ireland has wonderful food - contrary to what many of the guide books report. I loved the brown bread - there are a million variations on the theme so every moring we had a little brown bread breakfast adventure. I've tried numberous times to make it here and have been unsuccessful. Oh, well guess I'll just have to go back to Ireland.
